SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition vs Original:
Upgrades and Mod Compatibility

Already own Total War: SHOGUN 2 on Steam? You can keep playing the original without buying Complete Edition. The new edition is a separate purchase, and original mods do not carry over to it. Before spending money, check which original DLC you already receive and whether the new features matter more to you than your current mod setup.

Independent guide based on SEGA and Creative Assembly’s published policies. We have not run either edition, tested a mod list or checked your Steam account. SHOGUN 2 is a PC game; this page has no browser game player.

Choose the path that fits your situation

Your old mods come first
Keep the original as your starting point. SEGA says its mods remain unchanged, while those mods are incompatible with CE. Our advice is to preserve a setup you rely on rather than buy an upgrade expecting it to import your Workshop collection. Check each author separately for any CE release.
You want the new features
Consider CE for its advertised interface, visual, control and faction updates. Treat its mod environment separately. Compare those benefits with your actual offer and hardware requirements before buying; an advertised improvement does not establish better performance on your computer or compatibility with an ongoing campaign.
You want both editions
Store choice matters. SEGA’s Steam package includes CE and the original with associated DLC, excluding the original Blood Pack. Its GOG, Epic and Microsoft Store packages include CE only. A product with the same name on another store does not necessarily give you the same legacy-game access.

One name, two different environments

Original SHOGUN 2 vs Complete Edition

Complete Edition is the 2026 enhanced release, developed by MATABOO, Creative Assembly and SEGA. It includes the main game and the Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaigns. The original remains a separate playable edition. Distinguish a new product from a change to an existing library entry when comparing what you already own with what a store is selling.

Our buying advice: name the improvement you actually want. If reading the interface on a high-resolution display is your problem, UI scaling is a relevant feature to investigate. If your enjoyment depends on a particular overhaul, its edition support comes first. Neither a longer feature list nor a discount answers both needs automatically. We have not benchmarked frame rates or compared the editions in play.

What should you do with your old mods?

SEGA explicitly says original SHOGUN 2 mods are not compatible with CE and that original mods remain unchanged. Creative Assembly also said it was retaining the current original build. That gives you a reason to keep the original environment for a mod-focused game; it is not proof that every combination of mods is faultless or that an author will make a CE port.

  1. Identify the edition first. When reading a mod page or asking its author for help, state whether you mean the original or CE. A familiar title, screenshot or mod name does not establish which release a download supports.
  2. Look for an explicit CE release. Check the author’s description and supported version, not just whether the same name appears somewhere. This guide has not verified individual ports, current Mod.io entries or subscription steps.
  3. Preserve what you are already using. Keep notes about your original mod list and make a backup of important saves before experimenting. This is precautionary advice. We do not prescribe copying original files into CE, changing a load order or using a guessed rollback branch.

Free legacy DLC and the paid upgrade are separate

For current Steam owners, SEGA describes missing original-game DLC being granted at no additional cost. CE is a different entitlement: an optional purchase with a limited-time 75% loyalty discount. If you mainly want older campaigns or faction content, inspect your existing library entitlements first. Buying a second edition solely because you assume the older DLC is still missing may address a problem the grant already resolves.

The announced offer ends on November 12, 2026 at 16:00 GMT / 08:00 PST, equivalent to November 13 at 00:00 in Shanghai or 01:00 in Japan. This is a dated offer, not a permanent upgrade price. Sign into the Steam account that owns the original and check the displayed eligibility and final regional price. We have not tested your account or checkout.

If your entitlements or offer differ from that policy, note the edition, storefront and exact missing item before contacting support. Do not infer that a purchase on another store updates your Steam library, or that a discount must apply to every account. Keep the original Blood Pack question separate from a missing campaign; those names refer to different content and require different checks.

Steam vs GOG, Epic and Microsoft Store

For a new buyer who wants the original as well as CE, compare the package before comparing prices. SEGA lists a legacy copy in the Steam purchase and CE alone in the other three purchases. That distinction matters if your planned experience depends on original mods. An attractive offer for CE elsewhere does not answer the separate question of access to the original.

Two details worth keeping separate

Blood Pack: the Steam package’s exception applies to its included original-game content. CA separately confirms that blood is included in CE itself, whether or not you owned it in the original. This does not establish a free original Blood Pack entitlement for your account. Avoid reading either statement as “CE has no blood” or “every original owner receives Blood for free.”

Saves: keeping the original playable is different from importing a campaign into CE. We have not verified cross-edition save migration, modded-save behavior or cross-edition multiplayer. If finishing your current campaign is the priority, keep its original environment available. Back up important saves before experimenting, and seek an edition-specific compatibility statement instead of treating the mod policy as a save-file test.

Six common edition and upgrade questions

Does Complete Edition replace the original on Steam?

No. SEGA says existing owners can continue playing the original. It stopped being sold as a standalone Steam product, but that is not removal from owners’ libraries. New Steam CE purchases include the original; the package difference is important for someone who has never owned it.

Can I use my old SHOGUN 2 mods in CE?

No: the official compatibility policy excludes original mods from CE. Keep using the original environment for those mods, or check an author’s explicit CE-compatible release. We have not tested specific replacements and do not provide a file-copy shortcut or a universal installation fix.

Is the Complete Edition upgrade free?

No. The missing legacy DLC grant and the discounted CE purchase are separate. Check your original entitlements first, then decide whether CE’s features justify its actual displayed price. The dated 75% offer does not mean the new edition is automatically added to every original owner’s library.

Do Steam and GOG purchases include the same editions?

No. SEGA lists both editions in the Steam CE package, with the original Blood Pack excluded. GOG, Epic and Microsoft Store provide CE only. Check the store’s current product description before buying if having the original is part of your plan.

Does the Blood Pack exception mean CE has no blood?

No. The exception refers to the original content bundled with the Steam purchase. CA says CE itself includes blood. It does not follow that the original Blood Pack is newly granted to your account; we have not verified that entitlement.

Can I move my original campaign save into CE?

This guide cannot confirm that. The reviewed policies establish original-game access and mod boundaries, not a tested save-migration procedure. Keep an important campaign’s original environment available, back up its save, and check for guidance covering the exact edition and mods before making changes.
