The Wolf Among Us Remastered vs Original:
Which Version Should You Play?

Remastered revisits the original five-episode mystery, with updated presentation, Noir Mode and extras. If you already know the story, consider it for those additions rather than a new case. First-time players can wait for launch reviews; collectors face a later physical release. Digital is scheduled for October 29, 2026, while physical editions are planned for Q1 2027.

Independent pre-release guide based on Telltale’s announcements and developer interview. We have not played Remastered or verified your account’s upgrade eligibility. This is a PC and console game, with no browser player here.

Start with your reason for playing

You finished the original
Keep your current version in mind if you simply want another run through a story you enjoy. Remastered is more interesting when its revised look, monochrome option or development extras are the reason to return. Compare the eventual offer before deciding that another purchase is worthwhile.
This is your first visit
If waiting suits you, compare launch reviews on your platform before choosing Remastered. If you already have a working original copy and want to begin now, you can make that your first experience. The remaster’s promised improvements do not establish its actual launch quality.
You want a physical copy
Plan around Q1 2027 for Remastered retail editions, rather than the October digital date. Wait for the particular platform, region and package details you need. An older original copy and a future Remastered edition are different collecting choices, with separate availability and conditions.

One first mystery, a separate sequel

Original vs Remastered vs The Wolf Among Us 2

Remastered is a new presentation of Bigby’s first investigation. The Wolf Among Us 2 is the separate continuation, not another name for the remaster. Look for the complete product title when checking a store or trailer, particularly if your goal is a new story rather than another version of the first one.

What actually changes in Remastered?

In the October 1 developer interview, director Matt Saia says the team kept the story, directing decisions and overall art style. The work included new character models and textures, new shaders and relighting throughout the game. That is a reason to inspect the presentation, rather than expect a rewritten mystery. The interview describes updating the Telltale engine used for Batman; it does not describe an Unreal Engine 5 conversion.

Noir Mode provides a black-and-white alternative to the color presentation, with switching available during play according to Telltale. If the original’s palette is central to your enjoyment, compare the color footage too. A monochrome option gives you another way to view familiar scenes; whether that atmosphere appeals more is a personal preference.

The publisher also describes playable deleted scenes, more than an hour of behind-the-scenes interviews and videos, and an image gallery. Treat those as supplemental material rather than evidence of a replacement main story or a sequel included in the package. For a returning fan interested in how the game was made, these extras may matter more than another pass through the central mystery.

Should you replay, start now or wait?

For an existing player, separate wanting to revisit Fabletown from wanting an unfamiliar plot. If you mainly want to try different dialogue decisions, your working original copy may already serve that purpose. If you want to revisit the same scenes with the updated art, Noir Mode or archival material, Remastered gives you specific features to weigh against its eventual price.

For a newcomer who is happy to wait, our suggestion is to check platform-specific reviews after release before committing. Avoid spoilers while comparing technical reports: you need to know about stability, controls and the purchase package, not the solution to the mystery. If you choose an original copy instead, check that particular edition’s platform and included episodes rather than assuming every listing contains the same package.

To check the original on PC, open its official Steam listing, which may ask you to confirm your age. Check the current offer in your own store and account; this link does not establish a price, an upgrade entitlement or access on another platform.

Digital vs physical: dates and platforms

FormatPlanned windowPublished detail
DigitalOctober 29, 2026PC through Steam and Epic Games Store; PlayStation 5; Nintendo Switch; Xbox One
Xbox Series X|S accessWithin the announced digital planXbox One version through backward compatibility, not confirmation of a separate native Series release
Physical retailQ1 2027: January–MarchFurther retail details to be announced; check your chosen platform and region

On PC, compare your machine with the current Steam requirements before deciding to switch editions. Its listing names a 64-bit processor and operating system, Windows 10 and 8 GB of RAM for the minimum configuration. The recommended section lists Windows 11. Those are published requirements, not our benchmark results or a promise that your existing original setup will run Remastered equally well. Check the full processor and graphics entries too, and recheck them near launch rather than judging compatibility from the art style.

The June announcement mentioned Switch 2 and a holiday physical release. The later October list omits Switch 2 and gives physical editions a Q1 2027 window. We use the newer plan here; the omission alone does not establish that a Switch 2 edition is cancelled. Check a current platform listing before making a purchase around that assumption.

Free upgrades, discounts and saved progress

We could not confirm a general free-upgrade or owner-discount policy in the official materials checked on October 16. That does not establish that every owner must pay full price, either. Do not buy the original solely to qualify for an assumed upgrade. Check the exact store offer while signed into your own account, and ask the publisher if an entitlement is unclear.

Cross-version saves, recorded choices and achievement transfers are also unconfirmed here. The Remastered Steam page lists Steam Cloud and achievements, but those product features do not promise that an original save or achievement record will import. Keep existing progress available where possible and wait for explicit migration instructions before removing an installation you still need.

Check these details before choosing a copy

  1. Write down your platform and whether you already own a usable original copy. Compare the edition you can actually access, not a similarly named listing or a trailer for the sequel.
  2. Pick your priority: a first playthrough, a replay with new presentation, development extras or a physical collection. Waiting for retail makes sense only if the later window fits your preference.
  3. Check the final local price, included content and any owner offer directly. For physical copies, confirm region, supported hardware, episode coverage and any download requirements with the particular package or seller.
  4. For Remastered, compare real reports from your chosen platform after launch. Announced visual and technical improvements are not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or stability on your machine.

The Wolf Among Us version FAQ

Is Remastered the same story?

It revisits the complete five-episode first story. Telltale says the story and directing choices were preserved. The updated presentation and supplemental deleted scenes should not be confused with a newly written sequel.

Do I need to finish the original first?

Remastered presents the first story itself, so you do not need a separate original playthrough just to understand that case. Choose the version you want for your first experience rather than treating both as required purchases.

Is Remastered digital only?

No: Telltale plans physical retail editions for Q1 2027, after the October 29 digital launch. Specific retail packages still need confirmation; a digital date is not a promised delivery date for a disc or cartridge.

Is there a free upgrade for original owners?

No universal entitlement was confirmed in the sources checked for this guide. Free upgrades, discounts and the final price need checking for your store and account. Community guesses are not a purchase policy.

Will my old choices, saves or achievements transfer?

That is unconfirmed here. Do not interpret the same story, Steam Cloud support or an achievements label as a cross-version import promise. Look for instructions that explicitly cover your original platform and Remastered.

Does this include The Wolf Among Us 2?

Remastered and The Wolf Among Us 2 are separate projects. This guide compares versions of the first story, not a bundle containing the continuation. Check the exact product contents if a retailer offers a package.
